Section one contains policy perspectives; section two contains three schools' perspectives; section three contains chapters written by three external facilitators; section four addresses the issues from three prominant school effectiveness researchers; and section five gives international perspectives from the co-ordinator of the OECD Combating School Failure initiative.

Observation: Origins and Approaches in Early Childhood : Origins and Approaches

Description

"This book is an excellent resource for all those studying or working in the field of early childhood. It deals with key issues of observational processes offering a balance between theory and practical activities. It is written in a critical, engaging and informative way, with scope for interesting discussions with students, and is a useful tool for lecturers and students as in learning about observations for all involved in early childhood education." Dr. Ioanna Palaiologou CPsychol, Lecturer, University of Hull, UK "I find this a really useful addition to the early childhood literature on observation in early childhood settings and at home. The authors bring together observational practices in New Zealand and the UK through considering the history of each. This little book gave me great insights into curriculum approaches in New Zealand as well as endorsing some practices in the UK. I particularly welcomed the section on ethics and also the different cultural approaches to observation and the curriculum. This book is a `must have' for anyone studying in the early years field." Dr Cath Arnold, Early Childhood Consultant and associate of Pen Green Centre and Leicester University. Observation is a key and underpinning skill in early years and can contribute to providing high-quality education by helping early years practitioners to understand children's strengths and interests and participate sensitively in their learning. This book brings together ideas and information about the history, theory and practice of child observation in early childhood settings. Through considering approaches from New Zealand in parallel with insights from the practice of child observation in the UK, the book provides inspiration for respectful and appreciative approaches to observation, assessment and planning. The book covers a range of topics including: A comprehensive overview of the history of observation in early childhood education A range of practical techniques, both qualitative and quantitative for practitioners A consideration of ethics How to record, analyse and report observational data Observation offers a stimulating array of ideas about observation and its benefits. Any practitioner or researcher using this book will find much to enhance their professional practice and is essential reading for students on early years courses from foundation degree to postgraduate Early Years Practice.

Janet Malcolm has produced a brilliant, elegantly reasoned meditation on the art of biography, in which she takes as her example the various biographies of the poet Sylvia Plath. "The Silent Woman" is an astonishing feat of criticism and literary detection. It is not a book about the life of Sylvia Plath, but about her afterlife: how her reputation was forged from the poems she wrote just before her suicide; Kucers' the Use of Antibiotics: A Clinical Review of Antibacterial, Antifungal, Antiparasitic and Antiviral Drugs download epub how her estranged husband, the poet Ted Hughes, as executor of her estate, tried to serve two masters - Plath's art and his own need for privacy; and how it fell to his sister, Olwyn Hughes, as literary agent for the estate, to protect him by limiting access to Plath's work. "The Silent Woman," in the end, embodies a paradox: even as Malcolm brings her skepticism to bear on the claims of biography to present the truth about a life, a portrait of Sylvia Plath emerges that gives us a sense of "knowing" this tragic poet in a way we have never known her before. The result is a provocative work that will dispel forever the innocence with which most of us have approached the reading of any biography. It will be talked about for years to come.

The Dread Wyrm

Description

Some are born to power. Some seize it. And some have the wisdom never to wield it. The Red Knight has stood against soldiers, armies and the might of an empire without flinching. He's fought on real and magical battlefields alike, and now he's facing one of the greatest challenges yet. A tournament. A joyous spring event, the flower of the nobility will ride against each other for royal favor and acclaim. It's a political contest -- one which the Red Knight has the skill to win. But the stakes may be higher than he thinks. The court of Alba has been infiltrated by a dangerous faction of warlike knights, led by the greatest knight in the world: Jean de Vrailly -- and the prize he's fighting for isn't royal favor, but the throne of Alba itself... With so many new furry and feathery comrades around she is bound to have at least a few opportunities to explore this new world of hers...Or so she thought. Instead Chi might end up becoming more of a house cat than ever before. Despite living in a pet friendly building, Chi still has not had too many chances to go outdoors. Instead her fellow feline neighbors come visit her in her turf. Furthermore these posh and pomp kittens are not really the like that would appreciate a wild romp in the park or dumpster diving in a dark alley. Nope these cats would much rather lounge and be pampered by doting humans. That is not the lifestyle Chi was looking forward to in her new digs. So when given the chance she decides to embark on the outer reaches of her apartment--including the upstairs office and bedroom--before taking off towards the backyard and beyond. Once she has scaled the stairs to visit to find Mr. Yamada office empty, Chi does what a kitten does best and she completely tears up the place!

Small G: A Summer Idyll: A Virago Modern Classic

Description

At the 'small g', a Zurich bar known for its not exclusively gay clientele, the lives of a small community are played out one summer. Rickie Markwalder is a designer whose lover Petey was brutally murdered. Rickie and his performing dog Lulu are regulars at the bar, as are vindictive Renate, a seamstress, and her teenage apprentice Luisa. Into their lives comes Teddie, impressionable and beautiful, and a catalyst for the series of events that will change everything. Patricia Highsmith's final novel is an intricate exploration of love and sexuality, the depths of spite and the triumph of human kindness. It is a work that, in the tradition of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, shows us how bizarre and unpredictable love can be. Small g, in the words of her biographer Andrew Wilson, is an 'extended fairy tale suggesting that...happiness is precarious and...romance should be embraced.'

Why We Fight: Manifesto of the European Resistance download pdf, epub

Guillaume Faye,Pierre Krebs,John Black Morgan,Michael O'Meara: Why We Fight: Manifesto of the European Resistance

Why We Fight: Manifesto of the European Resistance

Description

Identitarians and others making up the European resistance lack a doctrine that truly serves as a political and ideological synthesis of who they are - a doctrine that speaks above parties and sects, above rival sensibilities and wounded feelings, that brings the resistance together around clear ideas and objectives, uniting them in opposition to the Europeans' dramatic decline. Our people today face the gravest peril in their entire history: demographic collapse, submission to an alien colonisation and to Islam, the bastardisation of the European Union, prostration before American hegemony, the forgetting of our cultural roots, and so on. In the form of an introductory text and a dictionary of 177 key words, Guillaume Faye, one of the most creative writers of the European 'Right', makes a diagnosis of the present situation and proposes a program of resistance, reconquest, and regeneration. He holds out the prospect of a racial and revolutionary alternative to the present decayed civilisation. The manifesto's principal objective is thus to unify the resistance by developing a common doctrine that unites everyone and every tendency seeking to constitute a European network of resistance - a doctrine that goes beyond the old sectarian quarrels and superficial divisions. All relevant subjects, including politics, economics, geopolitics, demographics, and biology are broached. As it was for the Nineteenth-century Left with Marx's Communist Manifesto, Why We Fight is destined to become the key work for Twenty-first century identitarians. This edition of Why We Fight contains the complete text of the original French edition, as well as additional material that was added for the German edition. Also included is an original Foreword by translator Michael O'Meara, author of New Culture, New Right, as well as a Foreword by Dr. Pierre Krebs, Chairman of the Thule-Seminar in Germany. With a doctorate in political science from Paris' Institute of Political Science, the essayist Guillaume Faye was one of the principal theoreticians of the French Nouvelle Droite in the 1970s and '80s prior to his growing sympathy for the identitarian movement. He has also been a journalist at Figaro-Magazine, Paris-Match, Magazine-Hebdo, Valeurs Actuelles, and a radio commentator. For several years he was the editor of J'ai tout compris (I Understood Everything), a private newsletter.

Alan Watts: The Way of Zen

The Way of Zen

Description

The Way of Zen begins as a succinct guide through the histories of Buddhism and Taoism leading up to the development of Zen Buddhism, which drew deeply from both traditions. It then goes on to paint a broad but insightful picture of Zen as it was and is practiced, both as a religion and as an element of diverse East Asian arts and disciplines. Watts's narrative clears away the mystery while enhancing the mystique of Zen. Since the first publication of this book in 1957, Zen Buddhism has become firmly established in the West. As Zen has taken root in Western soil, it has incorporated much of the attitude and approach set forth by Watts in The Way of Zen, which remains one of the most important introductory books in Western Zen. "No one has given us such a concise . . . introduction to the whole history of this Far Eastern development of Buddhist thought as Alan Watts, in the present, highly readable work." --Joseph Campbell

The Lord God Made Them All: The Classic Memoirs of a Yorkshire Country Vet

Description

The fourth volume of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small Finally home from London after his wartime service in the RAF, James Herriot is settling back into life as a country vet. While the world has changed after the war, the blunt Yorkshire clients and menagerie of beasts with weird and wonderful ailments remain the same. But between his young son, Jimmy, trailing him around aping his every move, stubborn farmers refusing to try his 'new-fangled' treatments and a goat that has eaten 293 tomatoes, Darrowby is far from quiet. And with another baby on the way, life is about to get even more chaotic...Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, The Lord God Made Them All is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Kathy Reichs: Bones Are Forever

Bones Are Forever

Description

Kathy Reichs, #1 New York Times bestselling author and producer of the Fox hit series Bones, is at her brilliant best in a riveting novel featuring forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan—a story of infanticide, murder, and corruption set in the high-stakes, high-danger world of diamond mining. Temperance Brennan has been asked to examine the corpses of three dead babies in Montreal. It’s a difficult assignment, complicated further by the fact that her long-time flame Detective Ryan is investigating the infants’ mother, a former (and possibly current) prostitute. When the woman flees to Edmonton, the investigation is joined by Royal Canadian Mounted Police sergeant with whom Tempe had an ill-advised fling over a decade earlier. The dissonant team heads to remotest Yellowknife—mining country—to pursue an ever more sinister trail. With the Fox series Bones in its seventh season and her popularity at its broadest ever, Kathy Reichs reaches new heights in storytelling and suspense-building. Bones Are Forever shimmers with sexual tension, crackling dialogue, and the thrilling twists Reichs delivers so well.

Sir J. M. Barrie: Peter Pan

Peter Pan

Description

Peter Pan, the "boy who would not grow up", originally appeared as a baby living a magical life among birds and fairies in J.M. Barrie's sequence of stories, "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens". His later role as flying boy hero was brought to the stage by Barrie in the beloved play "Peter Pan", which opened in 1904 and became the novel "Peter and Wendy" in 1911. In a narrative filled with vivid characters, epic battles, pirates, fairies, and fantastic imagination, Peter Pan's adventures capture the spirit of childhood-and of rebellion against the role of adulthood in conventional society.

Neil Oliver: A History of Scotland

A History of Scotland

Description

The dramatic story of Scotland - by charismatic television historian, Neil Oliver. Scotland is one of the oldest countries in the world with a vivid and diverse past. Yet the stories and figures that dominate Scottish history - tales of failure, submission, thwarted ambition and tragedy - often badly serve this great nation, overshadowing the rich tapestry of her intricate past. Historian Neil Oliver presents a compelling new portrait of Scottish history, peppered with action, high drama and centuries of turbulence that have helped to shape modern Scotland. Along the way, he takes in iconic landmarks and historic architecture; debunks myths surrounding Scotland's famous sons; recalls forgotten battles; charts the growth of patriotism; and explores recent political developments, capturing Scotland's sense of identity and celebrating her place in the wider world.

John O'Donohue: Four Elements: Reflections on Nature

Four Elements: Reflections on Nature

Description

From the beloved author of the bestselling "To Bless the Space Between Us" and "Anam Cara "comes a new work that shares his insights on nature and the ancient wisdom of this earth. John O'Donohue won hundreds of thousands of admirers with his now classic work on Celtic spirituality "Anam Cara." Unfortunately he died suddenly at age fifty-two just as his book of blessings, "To Bless the Space Between Us," was being published. The loss of his powerfully wise and lyrical voice has been profoundly missed, but his many readers are given a special opportunity to revisit John in a new book based on a series of papers he wrote on the elements of water, stone, air, and fire, now published here for the first time. O'Donohue's readers know him as both a spiritual guide and a poet, and in this work he exhibits both qualities, sharing his Celtic heritage and his love for his native landscape in the west of Ireland. As O'Donohue explores a range of themes relating to the way we live our lives today, he reveals how the energy and rhythm of the natural world--its innocence and creativity, its power and splendor--hold profound lessons for us all. With a foreword written by his beloved brother, Pat, this illuminating book is an inspired reflection on the ancient wisdom of the earth.

Adam Ellis: Books of Adam: The Blunder Years

Books of Adam: The Blunder Years

Description

Adam Ellis knew it was time to leave art school when a fellow student presented her final project to the class: "I put a condom on the Virgin Mary," she announced, unveiling a cheap figurine sheathed in latex. The professor loved it. Baffled by the praise his classmate receives, and intent on becoming an artist on his own terms, Adam plots his escape to Portland, Oregon to begin his life in the real world--only to realize that adulthood is a lot harder than it looks. Based on the blog of the same name, BOOKS OF ADAM details Adam's hilarious trials and tribulations in his attempt to become a functioning member of society. From his arrest after shoplifting a bottle of chocolate milk to a misguided attempt to make friends that lands him in a shack with a hippie couple who have just skinned a rabbit and are trying to entice him into a three-some, Adam is an amicable guy who can't seem to keep himself out of trouble. Paired with his signature black and white illustrations, Adam's stories weave together an uproariously funny and ultimately charming narrative about a young man trying to find his place in the world.

Mosaics are enjoying a resurgence, and this handsome book shows beginners how quick and easy it is to transform everyday items into functional objects of surprising style, simply by covering them with broken pottery, glass, tiles and even pebbles. Large step-by step colour photographs, simple techniques and 18 great-looking projects will help crafters create stunning results. Get ready for a monstrously good time! Little ones will learn counting and basic math concepts while they're laughing over these rollicking rhymes and hilarious, energetic illustrations. Warning: this book is not just entertainment. The author wants to teach you a lot about chess and improve the quality of your play! Growing out of David McRaney s popular blog, "You Are Not So Smart" reveals that every decision we make, every thought we contemplate, and every emotion we feel comes with a story we tell ourselves to explain them. But often these stories aren Precious Moments: Little Book of Prayers free pdf t true. Each short chapter covering topics such as Learned Helplessness, Selling Out, and the Illusion of Transparency is like a psychology course with all the boring parts taken out.
